Façades Facing East or West: Now More Incentivised than Ever  

We’re excited by the recent announcement of the definitive subsidy amounts for solar PV in SDE++ 2025 by Minister Hermans. Particularly the new categories for façades with east-west orientation.  

Here’s why this matters and how it opens opportunity for building owners, developers, and façade specialists: 

What’s New in SDE++ 2025 

For the first time, there are separate subsidy categories for solar panels on façades that are oriented toward the east or west. These orientations provide a more beneficial production profile: peaks in the morning and afternoon rather than a single midday spike. Projects may deviate up to 30° from due east or due west.  

Why East-/West-Facing Solar Façades Make Sense (Especially Now) 
  • Better output spread → instead of a sharp midday peak, energy generation is more evenly spread over daylight hours. More usable power during times of high demand. 
  • Grid advantages → less congestion during peak solar hours, which is an increasing concern. East-west façades help smooth the load profile. 
  • Higher subsidy rates → the SDE++ scheme specifically rewards east-west façade installations with higher base rates per kWh than some traditional orientations because of their “valued” output profile.
